Victoria Shipyards Wins Contract for New Naval
Vessels
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, November 9, 2004
Victoria Shipyards Co. Ltd. (VSL), is pleased to announce they
have been awarded a $69.7 million contract for the construction
of six training vessels to be used for basic naval training for
the Royal Canadian Navy.
During a ceremony yesterday at CFB Esquimalt, Malcolm Barker, VSL
Manager, said this contract is the single largest construction project
the shipyard has been awarded to date. “This naval contract
is a boost to VSL for several reasons,” said Malcolm. “Especially
because of the work and employment opportunities it generates. It
means the company’s nucleus of around 100 workers will have
employment well into 2008.”
VSL beat out two other Canadian shipyards to win this contract
(one West Coast, one East Coast).
These vessels, to be designated the ORCA class training vessels,
will replace the half century-old Yard Auxiliary General (YAG) training
vessels. “The ORCA class training vessel will perform a vital
role in the training and development of junior naval officers,”
said the Defense Minister Bill Graham. “This project represents
a significant investment by the Government of Canada in our domestic
shipbuilding industry and is a clear recognition of its value and
importance to Canadians.”
The new 33-metre vessels will be capable of reaching speeds of
20 knots and will possess an endurance of 750 nautical miles at
a cruising speed of 15 knots. Construction will commence by May
2005 with delivery of the first ship by mid 2006.
