Southern Railway of British Columbia moves water tunnels from California to Vancouver

Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY) was recently faced with the challenging task of moving 504 pieces of water pipe from Adelanto, California to their eventual homes in Capilano and Seymor, British Columbia.  The pipes, with a diameter of 10 feet each, will require 89 and 62 foot flatcars for transport. Northwest Pipe Company, the pipe manufacturer, found SRY preferable to other shipping methods because of the rates and services they offered.

The pipes compose a twin tunnel expansion to the current Seymour Water Filtration Plant of Vancouver. The new filtration system will pump source water from Capilano and Seymor through one of the new pipes to the filtration plant for filtration, corrosion control and disinfection.  The clean water will then be returned through the second tunnel for distribution.  In effect, the twin tunnels will join the Capilano and Seymor filtration plants.  SRY expects the project to be completed in mid-2009.
