Montana Rail Link's Santa Train provides opportunity for community children to deliver Christmas wishes, ride on train

12.15.08 - Missoula, Montana

While football fans were cheering on the Griz on a crisp December afternoon, families were gathering at the Southgate Mall for another Missoula favorite – Santa and Mrs. Claus and a visit to the Santa Train.  Once a year, Montana Rail Link hosts the Santa Train event, an opportunity for children to deliver their Christmas wishes to Santa and for some to take a ride on an MRL train.

This year’s MRL Santa Train event was nothing short of a success.  Approximately 740 visited the train that was parked near Southgate Mall between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 6th.  Southgate mall provided hot chocolate, coffee, cider and cookies to set the mood for those waiting in line to board.  Once aboard, children were treated to UM Griz items (including onboard tattoo application), candy canes, hats and gloves donated by Sears, as well as coveted one-on-one time with Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Joe Purcell of Sears, who assisted with distribution of hats and gloves, noted that the need was even greater this year considering the current economic climate.

Among the company volunteers that helped to make the event a success were Phil Barber, Christy and Elizabeth Cheff, Camille La, Debbie Marshall, Dennis and Sandy Meyer, TJ Sinclair, Perry Smith, Dale Virts, Charlie Alexander (Mrs. Claus) and Gerald Marshall (Santa).

Many company employees and their families showed up for a ride with the Claus’ on the journey from the Washington Corporations/MRL headquarters to the Mall or for the return trip. Charlie Alexander, Washington Corporations employee and two-time Mrs. Claus said, “It’s the most heartwarming and special day of the year!”
